Overall rating: Not good enough

Our ratings are based on a scale from 1 (We avoid) to 5 (Great) How we rate

Our “Planet” rating evaluates brands based on the environmental policies in their supply chains, from carbon emissions to wastewater, ingredients' impacts, product circularity, and more. Here we rate L'Occitane “Not Good Enough”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • It uses some lower-impact ingredients including organic ingredients, but it does not publish an aggregate breakdown of ingredients used.
  • It’s set a science-based target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in both its direct operations and supply chain but there’s no evidence it is on track.
  • There’s no evidence it’s taking meaningful action to reduce water use.
  • It offers in-store refills for some products but doesn't track and report on repeat purchases.
  • A high proportion of its palm oil is RSPO-certified.

Workers’ rights are central to our “People” rating, which assesses brands’ policies and practices on everything from child labour to living wages and gender equality. Here we rate L'Occitane “Not Good Enough”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • It doesn't disclose where all of its final production stage occurs.
  • It has initiatives to empower vulnerable women and girls in its supply chain.
  • It could be using mica, but it hasn't disclosed any information regarding responsible sourcing that mitigates human rights risks.
  • It audits some of its suppliers but does not specify what proportion.
  • Its Code of Conduct covers ILO Four Fundamental Freedoms principles.
  • There’s no evidence it ensures workers are paid living wages in its supply chain.

Note that the "People" rating in Good On You’s methodology is defined by labour rights and does not consider consumer health.

Brands’ animal welfare policies and, where applicable, how well they trace their animal-derived products, are the focus of our “Animals” rating. Here we rate L'Occitane “Not Good Enough”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • It uses ingredients derived from insects (eg byproducts of the bee, snail and/or silk industries), but no other animal substances.
  • It may conduct animal testing when required by law (for instance, in China), either by itself, through its suppliers, or through third parties.

Based on all the publicly available information we’ve reviewed, we rate L'Occitane “Not Good Enough” overall.
