Our ratings are based on a scale from 1 (We avoid) to 5 (Great) How we rate

The Body Shop is owned by Aurelius Group.

Our “Planet” rating evaluates brands based on the environmental policies in their supply chains, from carbon emissions to wastewater, ingredients' impacts, product circularity, and more. Here we rate The Body Shop “Not Good Enough”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • It uses some lower-impact ingredients including organic, however it does not publish an aggregate breakdown of ingredients used.
  • There’s no evidence it’s taking actions to protect biodiversity in most of its supply chain.
  • There’s no evidence it’s taking meaningful action to reduce water use.
  • Its product packaging is recyclable.
  • There's no evidence it has set a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target.
  • All of its palm oil is certified by RSPO.

Workers’ rights are central to our “People” rating, which assesses brands’ policies and practices on everything from child labour to living wages and gender equality. Here we rate The Body Shop “Not Good Enough”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • It doesn't disclose where all of its final production stage occurs.
  • There’s no evidence it supports diversity and inclusion in most of its supply chain.
  • It audits some of its suppliers but does not specify what percentage.
  • Its Code of Conduct covers ILO Four Fundamental Freedoms principles.
  • There’s no evidence it ensures workers are paid living wages in most of its supply chain.

Note that the "People" rating in Good On You’s methodology is defined by labour rights and does not consider consumer health.

Brands’ animal welfare policies and, where applicable, how well they trace their animal-derived products, are the focus of our “Animals” rating. Here we rate The Body Shop “Great”. It states that its entire product range is vegan.

  • It actively campaigns on an animal issue related to the beauty industry's impacts.
  • It's certified by Cruelty Free International's Leaping Bunny Programme.

Based on all the publicly available information we’ve reviewed, we rate The Body Shop “It's a Start” overall.
