Our ratings are based on a scale from 1 (We avoid) to 5 (Great) How we rate

tunemakers is owned by Unilever.

Our “Planet” rating evaluates brands based on the environmental policies in their supply chains, from carbon emissions to wastewater, ingredients' impacts, product circularity, and more. Here we rate tunemakers “It's a Start”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • It uses some lower-impact ingredients including organic ingredients, but it does not publish an aggregate breakdown of ingredients used.
  • It publishes a policy to assess the biodegradability and environmental toxicity of all of its ingredients and formulas.
  • Its product packaging is recyclable.
  • It’s set a science-based target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in both its direct operations and supply chain but there’s no evidence it is on track.
  • A high proportion of its palm oil is RSPO-certified, however it does not publish an aggregate breakdown of palm oil used.

Workers’ rights are central to our “People” rating, which assesses brands’ policies and practices on everything from child labour to living wages and gender equality. Here we rate tunemakers “It's a Start”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • Its final production stage happens in Japan.
  • There’s no evidence it provides financial security to its suppliers, which can result in poor working conditions and wages.
  • Its Code of Conduct covers ILO Four Fundamental Freedoms principles.
  • It provides a confidential complaints mechanism for workers in its supply chain to report suspected modern slavery.
  • It ensures some workers in the final production stage are paid living wages, though not through its entire supply chain.

Note that the "People" rating in Good On You’s methodology is defined by labour rights and does not consider consumer health.

Brands’ animal welfare policies and, where applicable, how well they trace their animal-derived products, are the focus of our “Animals” rating. Here we rate tunemakers “Very Poor”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • It uses animal-derived ingredients in its products.
  • It appears to use ingredients derived from farmed animals, including collagen, placenta, and elastin.
  • It has not made any public commitments to eliminate animal-derived ingredients.
  • It may conduct animal testing when required by law (for instance, in China), either by itself, through its suppliers, or through third parties.

Based on all the publicly available information we’ve reviewed, we rate tunemakers “Not Good Enough” overall.
