Our ratings are based on a scale from 1 (We avoid) to 5 (Great) How we rate

Our “Planet” rating evaluates brands based on the environmental policies in their supply chains, from carbon emissions to wastewater, ingredients' impacts, product circularity, and more. Here we rate Ulta “Not Good Enough”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • There’s no evidence it uses any lower-impact ingredients.
  • There’s no evidence it’s taking actions to protect biodiversity in its supply chain.
  • There's no evidence it has initiatives to address overproduction.
  • It uses recycled packaging
  • It states that it doesn't use plastic microbeads and uses clearly defined alternatives for all of its exfoliating products.
  • It could be using palm oil, but it has not disclosed any information regarding responsible sourcing that mitigates environmental impacts.

Workers’ rights are central to our “People” rating, which assesses brands’ policies and practices on everything from child labour to living wages and gender equality. Here we rate Ulta “Not Good Enough”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • It doesn't disclose where all of its final production stage occurs.
  • There’s no evidence it supports diversity and inclusion in its supply chain.
  • The brand claims to audit some of its supply chain but doesn’t specify what percentage.

  • Its Code of Conduct covers ILO Four Fundamental Freedoms principles.
  • It provides a confidential complaints mechanism for workers in its supply chain to report suspected modern slavery.

Note that the "People" rating in Good On You’s methodology is defined by labour rights and does not consider consumer health.

Brands’ animal welfare policies and, where applicable, how well they trace their animal-derived products, are the focus of our “Animals” rating. Here we rate Ulta “It's a Start”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

  • It's certified as animal test-free by PETA.
  • It appears to use ingredients derived from farmed animals, including milk-derived ingredients.
  • It has not made any public commitments to eliminate animal-derived ingredients.

Based on all the publicly available information we’ve reviewed, we rate Ulta “Not Good Enough” overall.
